Art Courses
 
The courses take place in the beautiful market town of Masham in Wensleydale, famous for its two breweries - Black Sheep and Theakston - and its annual Sheep Fair. Each course lasts from 10 am to 4 pm and there are breaks for tea, coffee and biscuits and an excellent buffet lunch which is included in the course payment.

The venue is usually Masham’s Methodist Church Hall, Park Street. Masham is easily reached by following the A6108 from Ripon or Leyburn or the B6267 from the A1 and Thirsk. The hall is behind the Methodist Church on Park Street. There is ample free parking.

Should you wish to stay in Masham or enjoy a meal before leaving for home please ask for details. Masham has an excellent range of accommodation and restaurants.

The tutors:

Ian Scott Massie’s artistic roots lie in the British Romantic School of the 1930s and 40s. He combines the visual style and philosophy of artists such as Paul Nash and John Piper with the palette and painterly freedom of Turner and Whistler in pursuit of the personality of the landscape. He has taught art for many years and his work is in print with leading art publishers. He lives in Masham where The Gallery in the Market Square is the main outlet for his work.

Hester Cox is a renowned printmaker whose work sells in many galleries around Britain. An experienced tutor, Hester has an extensive knowledge of traditional and contemporary printing techniques.

Hester will not only explain and demonstrate some of these exciting methods but you will then get a chance to create your own images using some of these printmaking techniques. This course is suitable for complete beginners and artists who would like to explore a new medium. Materials provided.

Watercolour Beginners £40

A course covering the basic principles and materials of watercolour,showing both its flexibility and vibrancy. This course is suitable for complete beginners and artists who would like to explore a new medium.

Thursday/Friday 21st/22nd May
Collagraph with Natural Materials (2 Days) £110

This two-day workshop gives participants the chance to explore this diverse method of printmaking with well-known collagraph printmaker, Hester Cox. Use a variety of natural and found materials to build a collaged plate that can be printed without the use of harsh chemicals to create a beautiful, textural image inspired by the natural landscape. Suitable for beginners and more experienced artists. Materials provided.

Knife Painting with Acrylics £40

Acrylic paint is a lovely medium to paint with a knife. Its soft buttery texture allows great surface effects, subtle mixing and bold statements. Come and be amazed at what happens when you throw away the brush. Suitable for all.

Friday 18th June
Painting from Photographs £40

A course which looks at photographs as an inspiration for painting, using the camera as a sketchbook and how to draw the most creative ideas from your own images.

Friday 2nd July
Inspiration from the Masters £40

A days painting course exploring the techniques used by early watercolourists such as Cotman and Turner. This will be a journey through the history of watercolour and the development of the medium. Suitable for all.
